Corey Landis: Feast of Scraps

Corey Landis emailed me last week to ask about a comment someone had left on my site about his album -- a comment that I missed -- and while I couldn't answer his question, I did go to his CD Baby site to listen to his music. And boy, am I glad I did. I immediately ordered one of his CDs, and I've had it playing all day.

Feast of Scraps, Corey's second album, is one of those albums that I'll feel incredibly lucky for ever discovering. Besides the fact that he recorded FoS himself, at home, and played every instrument you'll hear on it, he's one of those witty, slightly self-deprecating, brutally honest and altogether brilliant lyricists that don't come around so much anymore. From the very first verse on the album, I was hooked:

You’re negative
Always saying nay
Shouting expletives
At the people in your way
You keep puffing your Virginia Slims
As the planes hit the towers
And that’s why I’ll never buy you flowers

And let's add the fact that he's got one of those smoky, rough-around-the-edges voices that makes you feel like you're in a bar somewhere discovering the next great love child of Billy Joel, Ryan Adams, Tom Waits and Ben Folds. (PS: I swear I wrote that before I read his biography.) And that he sings about songwriting like honest songwriters should:

So I’m left wondering what I’m doing here
Spending too much money and another year
Thinking too much about what’s gone wrong
And trying to use it in another rip-off song

It seems I’m watching my life go down the tubes in this
Plastic crap factory of assholes and boobs
If I happen to make it, well, what would that mean?
That I’ve turned to shit like everyone else I’ve seen

I could quote the whole album. There's not a single song on Feast of Scraps that fails the "new album window test" for me -- that ten second window where you either decide you want to hear the rest of the song, or skip to the next track. I absolutely inhaled every track, and I'm still holding my breath.

While I'm impressed by his playing chops, his painfully emotional vocals, and his indie know-how, I'd say it's obvious that like most musicians I admire, it's his songwriting that throws me over the edge. I haven't felt this way about a songwriter since Josh Ritter, which interestingly enough, is where someone left a comment about Corey Landis.

And now, I'm a believer, too. Buy his album, listen to it, and love it... pops, hiss, feedback and all. It's one of the most honest records I've heard in a long, long time.

Hey, it's that girl you don't know from California again...I've just had the same experience with an album. Have you heard of Damien Rice? Well, with the artists you mention I think you *might* like it. I don't know you, but I like your music and a lot of the music you listen to. So, with that very limited amount of info., I guess I'm making a very un-educated hypothesis. ;)
