My mother and I are so incredibly alike in so many ways, it's scary.
For instance, the conversation we just had about trash cans. Like my mother, I am an advocate of having trash cans in every room. My boyfriend, however, is one of those people who won't put a trash can in the bedroom because there's a trash can in the adjoining bathroom.
My mother, who not only has a trash can in both the master bedroom and bathroom, also has a basket on the counter in the bathroom for small, random trash like Q-Tips.
That rules.
I was telling my mom that we recently replaced the kitchen trash can, and instead of letting me put the old kitchen trash can in the computer room, he threw it away. Why? "Because there's a trash can in the kitchen," he says. Well. I wish he could see the empty cigarette boxes and water bottles all over the desk here, all because there's no trash can under the desk. When I can't move my mouse anymore, I suppose I'll be bothered enough to gather it all up and throw it away -- in the kitchen -- but the clutter could have been avoided altogether if there was a trash can here. In the computer room.
So I said I'm going to buy eighteen trash cans while he's gone and put them down every ten feet, all over the house. That'll learn him.
And ashtrays. He's also one of those people who thinks one ashtray per room is enough. Me, I don't like to share ashtrays. It means it has to be passed back and forth, and I have to ask permission to ash my cigarette if I'm not the Keeper of the Ashtray at that moment. I want to be able to lay my cigarette down whenever I please, and not have to worry about someone else grabbing the ashtray when it's in there.
Personally, I think all this ashtray and trash can business is my boyfriend's clever ploy to make us communicate more. My mom thinks that's funny.
I'm not laughing.
Or throwing anything away, because I'm in the computer room.
Also, my mother apparently feels the same way about communication as do, because she ended our phone conversation because she had to watch the immunity challenge. Sweet.

So this is what you've been up to, huh? I'm a little relieved that the issues keeping you away from me (and #joiito) are of such incalculable importance. I can hardly wait until we're married--our philosophies re: ashtrays and garbage cans are completely in sync...and I feel the same way about boxes of Kleenex.
