The Temp Sessions, Pt. II

So yes, I did get that temp job. Turned out to be glorified telemarketing (or, Telemarketing For a Good Cause). Recruiting jailbirds for MDA Lock-Ups.

You in the back - shut up.

God bless my mother, who managed to find every highlight and positive point about my job when I called her and broke the news. We spent 30 minutes on the phone, I think, convincing each other this isn't the worst thing that's ever happened to me.

I went to this group interview on Friday, where I was plopped in a room with six of the most skittish and socially inept people I have ever met. What kind of temp agency sends a person who can't even look you in the eye when they say hello to a telemarketing interview?

Anyway, I'll skip all the boring stuff and say that I still think the only reason I got the job is because I can actually pronounce Muscular Dystrophy Association. You'd be surprised by the amount of people who can mangle the words muscular dystrophy so bad (apparently, the ration is oh... 6 out of 7 interviewees), it comes out sounding like they've got a mouth full of rocks covered with a wide swatch of duct tape.

So I started on Monday, and it shouldn't surprise you to know that I'm very good at this sort of thing.

If you know me at all, it also shouldn't suprise you to know that I quit on Thursday. I mean, come on people - telemarketing?

I think the deciding factor was the call I got on Wednesday from another agency who offered me a position I actually kind of wanted. The phone call went kind of like this:

Temp Agency: Hey, we sent your resume to blah-blah-blah and he wants to offer you the position.
Me: Great! Oh... I've already taken a position with another company.
TA: It's not the MDA thing, is it?
Me. ....
TA: [Audible sigh.] Okay. If you find out it... uh, isn't for you - give us a call okay?
Me: Sure, thanks.

So Thursday at work, our boss comes into the sweatshop and says, "Okay! We're going to have a little contest! Everyone stand up until you get your next jailbird!" (Yes, she's the sort of annoyingly cheerful person who ends every sentence in an exclamation point.) So, after I spent 40 minutes standing up, hunching over my tiny little desk in my tiny little cubicle trying to take decent notes on phone calls, I got sent home early for not making quota. Nevermind that I blew their fucking quota out of the water my first three days, or that I was having a crap day because my boyfriend was attending his grandmother's funeral and I didn't go because I felt some sense of loyalty to this crap job - nah. Go home.

So I called the second temp agency when I got home. Conversation went something like this.

Me: Hey, this is Shannon. I was wondering if that job is still available.
TA: It wasn't for you, huh?
Me: Is it for anybody?
TA: Probably. But I've seen your resume. Orientation's at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. See you there.

I honestly wish I had a tape of the phone conversation I had with the agency who sent me on this job - it's the stuff of legends. I started off very professional, but let's just say I don't think they'll be calling me for any more work. Ever. Which is fine, because there's only eight billion agencies in Greenville and I probably don't want a job from anyone who'd look at my resume and sent me to a telemarketing interview.

Being able to have that conversation almost made four days of the worst job ever worth it. I mean, any phone call that ends with the statement, "I'm sorry if you don't understand why I absolutely abhor this position, but the reason you may not understand me is because that job actually made me stupid. I could actually feel myself getting dumber, do you understand?" is worth at least 30 hours of my time.

I feel such a kinship with you now! I even called it "glorified telemarketing" in my journala entry which I wrote last night as I contemplated whether I should go back
